At this last Streets & Walkways Sub-Committee, we approved the next stage of work to explore comprehensive improvements to Fenchurch Street.
Fenchurch Street is undergoing significant change, with several major developments proposed or already under construction. Together with the number of people using Fenchurch Street station, this is expected to increase footfall considerably.
The existing street has narrow and, in places, uneven pavements. The project will therefore examine options including:
• wider pavements and greater pedestrian comfort
• improved crossings and accessibility
• potential new trees, planting, greening and seating
• a coordinated design linking the public-realm improvements delivered by different developments
The intention is to narrow and reallocate parts of the carriageway to create more pavement space, while retaining vehicle movement and access to premises.
The Committee approved £390,000, including risk provision, for approximately 12 months of feasibility work, technical surveys, design development and stakeholder engagement. This will include investigating what may be possible beneath the street, where utilities can significantly constrain locations for trees and planting.
The complete project is currently estimated to cost between £6 million and £8 million. That delivery funding has not yet been secured. This next stage will establish a more detailed design, clarify developer contributions and identify the remaining funding requirement before any decision is made about construction.
As Langbourn Ward Members, we will engage with officers throughout this process and help ensure that residents, businesses, workers and other users of Fenchurch Street have an opportunity to contribute.
